Cancer And Gum Disease

Cancer And Gum Disease

More and more often we’re hearing of new research connecting oral health problems with overall health problems. And it’s not just teeth that can cause the issues, it’s gum tissues as well. Gum disease has been linked to stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s. Recently, gum disease has also been linked to cancer.

Link Between Gum Disease And Cancer

A few recent studies have discovered a link between cancer and gum disease. In August of 2017, a study of 66,000 women found that those who had gum disease, or a history of gum disease were at a higher risk for cancer. Specifically, cancer of the gall bladder, lungs, esophagus, and breasts.

Additionally, a study done in Finland early last year suggested that the same type of bacteria that cause gum disease is also the cause of certain cancers, especially pancreatic.

Preventing Gum Disease

No study has proven that gum disease leads to cancer, but it’s still a good idea to avoid dental disease of any kind. Luckily, gum disease is very preventable as long as you have a good oral hygiene routine. This routine should include:

  • Brushing your teeth and gums at least twice a day
  • Flossing your teeth at least once daily
  • Rinsing your mouth with ADA approved mouthwash regularly
  • Visiting your regular dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and exam
