A better environment begins with small eco-friendly choices and daily practices. While you’re keeping your teeth and mouth healthy, there are also a few steps you can take to help keep our world healthy as well!
Making Eco-Friendly Dental Health Choices
Below are a few ways to go green with your oral health routine:
- Discarding your toothbrushes – Traditional toothbrushes are made of hard-plastic handles and nylon bristles. These can take up to hundreds of years to decompose! Instead of throwing away old toothbrushes, find new uses for them. Toothbrushes are great for scrubbing hard-to-reach places and can be used as paintbrushes for kids.
- Saving water – While 70% of the world is covered in water, only around 1% is safe for human consumption. Turning off your water while you brush your teeth can save up to 200 gallons of water a month! Saving water can be applied to other parts of your day as well, such as turning off the water while you wash your hands, only running your dishwasher when it’s full, and taking showers instead of baths.
- Choosing eco-friendly floss – Most floss is made of nylon materials that don’t biodegrade and are much too small to be processed by most recycling plants. Floss picks and containers are also unable to be recycled. Next time you’re searching for floss, make sure to choose eco-friendly brands or floss made from silk.
- Choosing eco-friendly toothbrushes – There are many eco-friendly replacements for traditional toothbrushes. There are bamboo toothbrushes, and toothbrushes made from recycled material. Additionally, electric toothbrushes only require that you throw away the head of a toothbrush instead of the whole thing!
