A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, cosmetic periodontal surgery, and in the surgical placement and maintenance of dental implants. Their focus includes all tissues that surround and support the teeth and dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the treatment of periodontal disease, gingival recession, extractions, bone grafting, implant placements, and cosmetic periodontal surgery.
The American Dental Association recognizes periodontics as 1 of the 9 specialties of dentistry. Periodontists receive extensive education and training in oral microbiology, periodontal surgery, oral cosmetic surgery, bone regeneration, and dental implantology in a 3 year advanced surgical residency program after dental school.
Additionally, Dr. Jenkins is board-certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. A Diplomate is a periodontist who has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty and who is certified by the American Board of Periodontology.
